Like other product names that have come to be used as standard terms such as tarmac and hoover the Symbol barcode scanner has become a blanket term for any make or model of scanner. Symbol technologies, the original company behind the famous products became a market leader before being absorbed by the giant Motorola corporation. But, such was the huge number of Symbol scanners that the original companies name which was established in the 1970s was already entrenched by the time Motorola appeared on the scene in 2007.
