There are several different types of barcode scanner including handheld, wireless and USB scanners. But one of the simplest and least expensive is the pen type bar code reader. They are so called because they look like and are held like a pen. The pen type scanner has a light source and photo diode in the tip. The barcode is read by running the pen tip along it.
Laser barcode scanners come in a variety of styles, but are usually handheld with a handle and trigger button which sparks the light source. They work by scanning the laser beam across the barcode.
LED barcode scanners, also known as CCD readers operate with a row of hundreds of minute light sensors in the head of the scanner. The newest type of barcode scanners are the camera-based readers. These 2D imaging scanners capture an image of the barcode through a small video camera. The image is then decoded through very sophisticated digital image processing. Camera-based barcode scanners can take 500 images a second, which helps eliminate any errors.
Barcode scanners need to be connected up to a computer, which means the furthest the scanner can be moved is the length of the connection cable. Wireless barcode scanners eliminate the need for the cable, giving the person doing the scanning much more freedom of movement.
For those wanting a simpler direct connection to the computer there are USB barcode scanners. These are “plug and play” and so are installed very easily. They are also ideal for using with laptops and netbooks.
While most barcode scanners are handheld there are also stationary scanners. These are often seen on checkouts. They are fitted in the counter and products’ barcodes are read by being passed over the scanner.
