Handheld barcode scanners have a light source and light sensor as well as a lens. It flashes light on to a barcode and transmits what it sees to a computer where the data is decoded.
These types of barcode scanner come in different kinds and sizes, some models weighing as little as 9oz or as much as 3lb. These scanners are connected to the computer, or in a supermarket or store to the till, by a cable or wirelessly
Cables can be up be up to five ft long, allowing plenty of movement for the scanner within a limited area. Some models can be connected up via the USB port. For those needing more freedom movement a wireless connection can see the scanner being used up to 160 ft from the computer.
Wireless scans are fitted with chargeable batteries. These can last up to 30 hours, or conduct 20,000 scans between recharges.
